Abstract

Many countries, particularly in the African continent, are witnessing a noticeable increase in asymmetric security threats, both in terms of their diversity and spread. This escalation is largely attributed to a range of factors, including poverty, political instability, weak institutions of good governance, and the absence of justice and the rule of law. These conditions have had a direct impact on Algeria’s national security. Accordingly, this study aims to provide a general overview of these circumstances, while shedding light on the key deterrent mechanisms and strategies adopted by Algeria to secure its borders and mitigate the consequences of such threats.
The study concludes that the complete eradication of this type of threat is extremely difficult. Therefore, it is imperative for the Algerian state to focus its efforts on learning how to manage, contain, and undermine these threats in order to safeguard its national security.
